Alice in Wonderland [2010]

The familiar Lewis Carroll tale is reinterpreted by being framed as the story of a grown-up Alice (Mia Wasikowska), who is manipulated into a marriage to a young man she does not love. When she runs away after he proposes during a party, she falls through a deep hole that brings her to the world of the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter), the Cheshire Cat and other magical characters. Also with Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen, Christopher Lee, Matt Lucas, Anne Hathaway, Crispin Glover and Alan Rickman. Directed by Tim Burton. [1:49 - PG]

thumbs up

"A fantastical romp that proves every bit as transporting as that movie about the blue people of Pandora, his "Alice" is more than just a gorgeous 3D sight to behold."

- Michael Rechtshaffen

thumbs down

"It's totally devoid of wonder...This Alice in Wonderland has been gutted, it’s plot replaced with The Chronicles of Narnia... Even more despicable, a tiresome Disney girl power moral is tacked on at the end."

- John DeVore
